My First Full-Day Wedding: A 10-Hour Celebration Full of Love, Teamwork, and Sunset Magic
When I say this wedding was a dream, I truly mean it.
This summer, I had the privilege of photographing my very first full wedding day—ten hours of love, laughter, tiny details, big moments, and everything in between. It wasn’t just a wedding; it was a day I’d been involved with for nearly a year, helping two wonderful people plan, organize, and bring their vision to life. I wasn’t just their photographer—I was their timeline manager, decoration helper, rehearsal assistant, and in many ways, a friend walking alongside them through it all. And that’s exactly how I love to do weddings.
From the moment they booked with me, I knew I wanted to be fully invested. This couple welcomed me into their wedding planning with open arms, and I was honored to help in every way I could. From ironing out the little details in their timeline to offering ideas for décor, I made it my mission to help their day go off without a hitch. We even crafted some of the wedding decorations together—a memory I’ll always treasure.
The Night Before: Rehearsal & Relationship
The night before the wedding, I attended their rehearsal at the church. Not only was it an opportunity to scout lighting and plan ceremony angles, but I also stepped in to help coordinate the processional. Who walks when, how to pause, how to line up—it all matters. Helping answer those last-minute questions brought the couple and wedding party so much peace of mind. They knew that on the day of, things would run smoothly because someone had their back. That’s something I strive to be for all my couples: someone who can quietly and confidently keep the wheels turning while they soak in the moments.
The Wedding Day: Hectic Start, Heartfelt Finish
The wedding morning started like many do—beautifully chaotic. Between gathering details for flat lays and navigating hair and makeup delays, it was a bit of a whirlwind at first. I’ll be honest: I always wish I had just a little more time for those detail shots. But that’s real life. Things run behind. Nerves kick in. People need help. That’s exactly why I build extra buffer time into my timelines—so that when things get a little crazy, there’s still breathing room.
And sure enough, it paid off. By the time we got to group photos, we had made up the lost time—and then some. In fact, we were a full 40 minutes ahead of schedule, which is practically unheard of in the wedding world! That extra time gave us the opportunity to do something truly special: the bride was able to stop by the hospital and visit her residents. It was one of those once-in-a-lifetime moments, and being able to make that happen for her meant everything.
The Power of a Second Shooter
This wedding was also the first time I brought along a second shooter for a full-day package—and let me tell you, it was the best decision I could’ve made.
Having someone by my side who could jump in where I couldn’t, who had her own creative eye, and who could capture the same moment from a totally different perspective—it made all the difference. There were so many little moments that would’ve been missed if I were doing it alone. For example, during the ceremony, I focused on capturing the wedding party walking down the aisle and emotional reactions in the pews, while my second shooter captured every handshake and fist bump the groom shared with his groomsmen. Those shots were priceless and totally unposed—exactly the kind of candid magic that makes a wedding gallery complete.
Later in the day, when the bridal party wanted to hit the bar for celebratory drinks, I had my second shooter tag along with them to capture all the fun and laughter while I stayed behind to grab some last-minute family photos and detail shots of the reception space. Without her, I would’ve had to choose one or the other—but together, we got both.
We were able to tag team the entire day. One of us could watch over equipment or help set up a shot while the other captured something spontaneous. We bounced ideas off each other, shared gear information, and motivated each other to keep pushing creatively even when our feet were aching. It felt less like work and more like creating with a friend—which is the best kind of work, honestly.
I even got to take a proper break during dinner (yes, photographers are humans too!) because I trusted that everything was still being covered. That quick recharge gave me the energy to surprise the couple with a few instant Polaroids during the reception—a small touch that made a big impact and gave them something tangible to hold before their digital gallery arrived.
Wrapping Up with Magic
We ended the evening with one of the most beautiful golden hour sessions I’ve ever shot. The light was soft, the couple was relaxed and glowing, and we had room in the timeline to just breathe and create without rushing. Those final images turned out to be some of my all-time favorites—romantic, intimate, and full of joy.
Yes, a ten-hour wedding can be done with just one photographer. But after this experience? I’m convinced that having a second shooter on these longer days is not only beneficial—it's transformative. It allows me to serve my couples with more creativity, more efficiency, and more heart. It’s about so much more than extra coverage; it’s about providing the kind of experience I want all my couples to have—seamless, supported, and full of joy.
A Wedding to Remember
This wedding reminded me why I love what I do. It wasn’t just the photos (though those turned out beautifully); it was the connection, the teamwork, the quiet moments behind the scenes that no one sees. It was the bride holding my hand when she got nervous, the groomsman asking for help pinning a boutonnière, the mom sneaking me a thank-you cookie at the end of the night. It was being a part of something bigger.
So here’s to my first full-day wedding—the kind of day that changes you, fuels your passion, and leaves you grateful beyond words. I’ll never forget it. And I cannot wait to do it all again.
If you're planning your wedding and looking for someone who will be all in with you—not just on the day itself, but every step leading up to it—I’d be honored to chat. Because you deserve a photographer who’s just as excited about your big day as you are.
